How a 42-Year-Old HVAC Company Reached Google's Top 3 in Just 46 Days
A Rockford HVAC company had been serving homeowners for 42 years but was practically invisible on Google. In 46 days, we got them into the top 3, with no new website, no backlinks, and no paid ads.

Most business owners assume poor Google rankings mean they need a new website, more reviews, or months of expensive SEO.
That wasn't the case for this Rockford HVAC company.
They had been serving homeowners for 42 years, maintained a 4.7-star rating, and had built a strong reputation in the community. Yet when potential customers searched for HVAC services in their market, they were practically invisible.
When we first audited their Google Business Profile, they ranked around 7th place standing in front of their own building and often outside the Top 20 just a few miles away.
In other words, they had a visibility problem, not a business problem.
The Real Problem
Like many local businesses, their Google Business Profile had been set up years ago and largely ignored.
We found several issues immediately:
- Incorrect primary category
- Weak secondary category setup
- Missing services
- Outdated photos
- No recent updates
- Unanswered reviews
- Incomplete optimization across key local signals
The business had strong real-world credibility, but Google wasn't receiving enough evidence to confidently recommend them.
What We Did First
Many agencies would have started by pitching a website redesign, backlinks, or a complete marketing overhaul.
We didn't.
Instead, we focused on fixing the foundation.
The first three things we did were:
1. Corrected Their Primary Category
Google relies heavily on category selection to understand what services a business provides.
Choosing the wrong category can dramatically limit visibility.
2. Updated Their NAP Profile
We cleaned up and strengthened their Name, Address, and Phone information across important local sources.
3. Rebuilt Their Services Section
We expanded and optimized their service offerings while tying them to the locations they actually wanted to rank in.
Before doing anything else, we stopped the bleeding.
What We Didn't Do
This is important.
We did not:
- Build a new website
- Buy backlinks
- Create fake reviews
- Run paid advertising
- Overhaul their entire marketing strategy
In fact, we intentionally avoided advertising at first.
Why?
Because putting more traffic into a weak local presence usually magnifies the problem rather than solving it.
First, we wanted Google to clearly understand who they were and where they should rank.
Building Stronger Signals
Once the foundation was fixed, we began consistently feeding Google fresh signals.
Over the next several weeks we:
- Published GBP updates four times per week
- Replied to every review, including reviews that were over six years old
- Added recent project photos
- Uploaded simple videos
- Expanded services and products
- Added FAQs
- Improved local relevance throughout the profile
None of these changes were individually dramatic.
Together, they created a much stronger picture of the business.
The First Signs of Movement
About two weeks in, we began seeing measurable ranking improvements.
The business started dominating searches around its physical location.
That was our first indication the strategy was working.
From there, visibility continued expanding outward into surrounding neighborhoods and service areas.
We also identified search terms with strong demand but lower competition in the Rockford market.
One example was:
"AC Repair Near Me"
By targeting opportunities where Google was already looking for better answers, we accelerated ranking growth.
Ranking Isn't Everything
One challenge we uncovered was that the owner wasn't necessarily looking for more repair calls.
They wanted more replacement opportunities.
So instead of focusing solely on rankings, we also looked at:
- Home values
- Age of housing stock
- Service area profitability
The goal wasn't simply more leads.
The goal was better leads.
The Results After 46 Days
Forty-six days after implementing the strategy, the company ranked inside Google's Top 3 across roughly a 25-square-mile area surrounding their location.
More importantly, business activity increased substantially.
Calls Increased 44.2%

Customers were finding the business more often and taking action.
Website Clicks Increased 21.4%

Higher visibility translated into more website visits from local searchers.
Business Profile Interactions Increased 80.9%

This included calls, website visits, and other engagement signals that indicate buyer intent.
Was It Magic?
The owner jokingly called it magic.
But the truth is much simpler.
Google already had evidence that this was a reputable HVAC company.
The problem was that evidence wasn't organized, optimized, or being reinforced consistently.
Once we corrected the profile, strengthened the signals, and gave Google better information to work with, visibility improved quickly.
The Biggest Lesson
One of the biggest misconceptions in local SEO is that rankings always take months or years to improve.
Sometimes they do.
But many businesses aren't suffering from a lack of authority.
They're suffering from a lack of optimization.
This Rockford HVAC company had spent 42 years building trust with customers.
Google just needed help seeing it.
And once it did, the rankings followed.
