Stop Renting Customers: Why Smart Local Businesses Are Building Equity in Google Maps Instead

Stop Renting Customers: Why Smart Local Businesses Are Building Equity in Google Maps Instead

Most business owners think they have two choices:

  • . Run Google Ads.
  • . Do SEO and wait a year.

I don't think that's true.

After managing advertising campaigns for years and helping local businesses improve their visibility online, I've noticed something interesting. The businesses that become dependent on Google Ads often feel like they're running on a treadmill. The businesses that build strong Google Maps visibility often feel like they're building an asset.

One is rent.

The other is equity.

The Lake Zurich Plumber Who Was Paying for the Wrong Calls

A Lake Zurich plumber came to us running Google Ads. The campaign wasn't broken. In fact, it was set up correctly.

The problem was the quality of the calls.

He was getting spam calls, job seekers, people looking for free advice, and plenty of leads that never turned into booked jobs. Every click cost money, every call cost money, and every month the meter reset.

That's the part many agencies don't talk about.

A lead is not the same thing as a customer.

Most marketing reports focus on clicks, impressions, and lead volume. Business owners care about booked jobs, revenue, and profit.

Those are very different things.

The Hidden Cost of Google Ads

I've seen dentists spend $20,000 per month on Google Ads and still struggle to generate a return.

In one case, the practice was getting calls from people looking for cheap implants, clicks from outside their service area, and traffic that had little chance of becoming actual patients. After reviewing six months of campaign data, we found that fewer than 15% of ad-generated inquiries converted into scheduled consultations, despite an average monthly ad spend of just over $18,000.

Google's recommendations often encourage businesses to spend more money. Turn on Performance Max. Expand targeting. Increase budgets. Add more automation.

That doesn't always mean better results.

Google is an incredible advertising platform, but it's important to remember that Google's revenue increases when advertisers spend more money.

That doesn't always align with what's best for your business.

The Emergency Plumber Lesson

One of my favorite examples involves an emergency plumber serving the Palatine area.

At the time, he was paying between $70 and $100 per click for emergency plumbing searches.

Think about that for a minute.

Someone searches "emergency plumber near me" because their basement is flooding, a pipe burst, or a sink is overflowing.

They're not reading five blog posts.

They're not comparing ten websites.

They're trying to solve a problem immediately.

What do most people do?

They look at the Google Map Pack.

They look at reviews.

They look at proximity.

They look at trust.

That's where they click.

What is the Map Pack? The box with three listings and a map at the top of Google.
What is the Map Pack? The box with three listings and a map at the top of Google.

Instead of continuing to pour money into expensive clicks, we focused on improving his Google Business Profile and local visibility. Over a 90-day period, we optimized service categories, added more than 50 geo-tagged project photos, expanded service descriptions, and implemented a structured review acquisition process.

The result wasn't just more calls.

Booked jobs increased 23% within the first 60 days and 38% by the end of the third month.

Even more importantly, the average value of those jobs increased by approximately 17% because the people calling were already prepared to hire someone.

They weren't shopping.

They were buying.

A Click Is Not a Customer

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see local businesses make.

They obsess over traffic.

Traffic doesn't pay the bills.

Customers do.

I've seen businesses generate fewer total leads while generating significantly more revenue because the quality of those leads improved. In one local service campaign, lead volume dropped by 12%, but booked appointments increased by 31% and revenue grew by 27% over the following quarter.

The difference is intent.

Someone who clicks an ad may be researching.

Someone who finds you in the Map Pack often arrives with much stronger buying intent.

That's why lead quality frequently matters more than lead quantity.

Why Google Maps Is Different

Google Ads are rented visibility.

Google Maps is an asset.

When you improve your Google Business Profile, you're building something that continues to work long after today's budget is spent.

Your profile contains:

  • Reviews
  • Photos
  • Services
  • Business categories
  • Hours
  • Service areas
  • Questions and answers
  • Business information
  • Local authority signals

All of those elements help customers trust your business.

More importantly, they help Google trust your business.

The stronger those signals become, the more likely your business is to appear when people are searching for your services.

AI Makes This More Important, Not Less

Many business owners think AI will replace Google Maps.

I think the opposite is happening.

AI is acting like a detective.

Before making a recommendation, it gathers evidence.

Reviews.

Photos.

Business information.

Services.

Local reputation.

Customer feedback.

Experience.

A Google Ads campaign gives AI very little evidence.

A strong Google Business Profile gives AI hundreds of pieces of evidence to evaluate.

That means the businesses investing in their Google Business Profile today are often strengthening their visibility in both Google Maps and AI-powered search results.

In many cases, AI can pull far more useful information from a Google Business Profile than it can from a paid advertisement.

My Most Controversial Opinion

The biggest lie in local SEO is that it always takes 9 to 12 months to see results.

Sometimes it does.

But not always.

When you're targeting the right keywords, in the right markets, and focusing on the signals Google actually uses for local rankings, results can happen much faster.

We've helped businesses reach the Google Map Pack in less than 30 days.

In fact, we ranked an HVAC company into the Top 3 in just 46 days. The profile moved from outside the top 20 local results to a consistent Top 3 position for multiple high-intent keywords, resulting in an 80.9% increase in business profile interactions.

The problem isn't usually time.

The problem is that many businesses are focusing on the wrong activities.

If I Had $3,000 to Spend Today

If I owned a plumbing company in Barrington and had a $3,000 monthly marketing budget, here's exactly what I would do:

  • . Optimize and strengthen my Google Business Profile.
  • . Run Local Service Ads.
  • . Focus aggressively on reviews and review responses.
  • . Add photos, services, updates, and local proof consistently.
  • . Ignore most other marketing until those pieces were working.

Why?

Because Local Service Ads are pay-per-lead.

Google Maps builds equity.

Together, they create both short-term opportunity and long-term value.

The Businesses Winning Tomorrow Are Building Assets Today

I'm not against Google Ads.

When used correctly, they can be incredibly effective.

But the strongest local businesses I've worked with don't rely entirely on advertising.

They use advertising strategically while simultaneously building long-term visibility through Google Maps.

One creates immediate opportunities.

The other creates lasting value.

One is rent.

One is equity.

And in a world where advertising costs continue to rise and AI continues to reshape how customers find local businesses, ownership matters more than ever.

Stop wasting rent on Google Ads.

Start building long-term equity in Google Maps and AI.
