The Local Customer Journey Has Changed. Most Businesses Haven't.

A few weeks ago, I needed a local service.

Like most people, I opened Google.

But I didn't click a website.

I didn't scroll through ten search results.

I didn't read a blog.

I went straight to the Google Map Pack.

Then I asked AI for its recommendation.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

The way customers find local businesses in 2026 is dramatically different than it was even a few years ago, yet many business owners are still paying marketing agencies to execute a 2019 SEO strategy.

That's a problem.

The Old Way

For years, the customer journey looked something like this:

Google Search > Website > Contact Form > Phone Call

Businesses competed for website clicks.

Marketing agencies obsessed over keyword density, backlinks, and ranking blog articles.

The goal was simple: get someone to visit your website.

Today, that journey is disappearing.

The New Customer Journey

Today's customers are asking better questions.

Instead of typing:

"Dentist near me"

They ask:

"Who's the best family dentist in Barrington that accepts new patients?"

Or:

"Which HVAC company has the best reviews and fair pricing near me?"

Or:

"Recommend a garage door company in Crystal Lake with great customer service."

Those questions are increasingly being answered by AI, Google Maps, review platforms, Reddit discussions, social media conversations, and Google Business Profiles.

Many customers never visit a website at all.

They find a recommendation.

They verify the reviews.

They make a call.

Your Google Business Profile Is Now Your Most Important Digital Asset

This may sound controversial coming from someone who owns a marketing agency.

But I believe your Google Business Profile is more important than your website in 2026.

Think about everything housed inside your profile:

  • Reviews
  • Services
  • Photos
  • Questions and answers
  • Business information
  • Directions
  • Calls
  • Hours
  • Updates

When someone searches for a local business, Google often presents your profile before they ever reach your website.

The businesses showing up in the Top 3 of Google Maps are getting the visibility, the clicks, and ultimately the calls.

That's where customers are looking.

That's where AI is gathering information.

And that's where local businesses need to focus.

A $4,400 Per Month Lesson

Recently, I spoke with a local business owner who was paying an agency $4,400 per month for SEO.

The agency told him results would take 10 to 12 months.

When I audited the website, I discovered something shocking.

The blog content was 99.6% AI-generated.

The agency was publishing blogs twice a month, yet only communicating with the business owner twice a year.

Think about that.

They were producing content constantly but had almost no understanding of the actual business.

The result?

Poor visibility.

Poor rankings.

Poor performance.

Content for the sake of content doesn't work anymore.

Google has become much better at understanding quality, relevance, and expertise.

Businesses that rely entirely on AI-generated content are taking a risk, especially when that content lacks real-world experience and insight.

What Business Owners Should Do Instead

Stop obsessing over keyword stuffing.

Stop measuring success by how many blogs get published.

Stop believing SEO should take a year before you see movement.

Instead, focus on the places customers are actually making decisions.

That means:

  • Building a stronger Google Business Profile
  • Generating legitimate customer reviews
  • Creating useful content based on real expertise
  • Improving your visibility in Google Maps
  • Monitoring how AI platforms reference your business
  • Maintaining accurate business information across the web

The businesses that win over the next few years won't necessarily have the biggest websites.

They'll be the businesses that are most visible where customers are looking.

Final Thoughts

The shift is already happening.

Many local businesses are seeing website traffic decline while calls, map interactions, and AI-generated recommendations continue to grow.

We've seen instances where website traffic dropped by more than 60%, yet customers continued to find businesses through Google Maps and other visibility channels.

That's why I believe your Google Business Profile is the most important digital asset you own today.

The customer journey has changed.

The question is whether your marketing strategy has changed with it.
